In steep mountain areas, small landslides triggered by rainfall may fall into streams and produce debris flows. These moving mixtures of water and rock can be as thick as wet concrete and are a much greater hazard than ordinary floods.
Tsunami usually cannot travel more than a kilometre over dry land. They can however travel many kilometres up low-lying rivers and streams.

Mt Ngauruhoe in Tongariro National Park is the most frequently erupting volcano on the New Zealand mainland, erupting on average every 6 to 7 years. It hasn’t erupted since 1975 however, and is now undergoing its longest break from activity since European settlement.

Meteors were reported in the early hours of Tuesday, 3 August in the Auckland region and the lower North Island. The lower North Island meteor was seen by pilots of several aircraft – they though it landed in the sea northeast of Cape Palliser in southern Wairarapa. Jennie McCormick of Auckland Stardome Observatory said the meteors may possibly be from the Perseid meteor shower.
