In the morning of 23 May torrential rain caused flooding at Stoke near Nelson. A supermarket and three schools were closed due to floodwaters produced by 98 mm of rain in the previous 24 hours, 53 mm of which fell between 8 and 9 am. A few hours later on 23 May parts of Taranaki were also affected by heavy rainfall, with many roads flooded. North of New Plymouth the Waiwakaiho River burst its banks and swamped the Meeting of the Waters reserve. A pet motel nearby was cut off and men had to wade through chest-deep water to rescue animals. At Timaru Stream on Weld Rd, a man had a lucky escape as a raging torrent caught him on the swing bridge, which minutes later was torn from its foundations. The town of Oakura was worst affected, with four beachside houses flooded. An unoccupied car was swept a kilometre down the Oakura River into the sea where it was later recovered.
